A dermatome is an area of skin supplied by a particular spinal nerve. When you lose feeling in particular areas of skin, the loss of function can be linked to these spinal nerves. For instance, numbness on the pinky (medial) side of your arm in the area highlighted in green and labeled “C8,T1” on the diagram could indicate damage cervical nerve 8 (C8) and/or thoracic nerve 1 (T1). This is one way that neurologists make diagnoses with regard to your nerve function.
One interesting (and kind of gross) way to visualize a dermatome is that the herpes virus often affects these particular nerves. During a breakout, you can sometimes find herpes along the dermatome of the nerve that it has affected.
